Scratch render is a relatively new process that originated on the continent about a decade ago. It is a coloured cement based render with a surface that appears similar to weathered stone. Scratch render is applied in such a manner that the exterior of the house is made to look plaster flat, unlike with normal sand and cement render. The surface of the render is then ‘scratched’ with a nail float.

Scratch render incorporates silicone technology, which is more water repellent than a traditional sand and cement render, yet still allows water vapour to pass through the render thus allowing the wall to breathe.  The Ashlar effect, a weathered stone effect, can also be achieved using scratch render and a traditional stone or buff colour. Stone work or block work can easily be replicated on plinths, corbels, heads and quoins.
